Under the title "What the federation says about the paddle, ball, and court in pickleball," this article lays out the basics in a simple reading order. Find out in the federation rules what you need to bring to play. The sections, in order: how it works in practice, the step-by-step walkthrough, and the criteria that decide. Who it is for: pickleball players in France, beginners or club members, who want to choose and organize their bag and travel with their gear.
How it works in practice
Applicable rule: in a match with line judges, the only line call left to the players is the centerline on the serve.
Applicable rule: the USA Pickleball rulebook bans anti-slip paint, rubber, sandpaper features, and moving parts on the paddle.
One principle to know: the court has the same dimensions, 6.10 m by 13.41 m, in singles and in doubles, according to USA Pickleball. Keep that in mind for what follows.
A basic point: the USA Pickleball rulebook sets no weight limit for the paddle. Check it against your own situation.
The step-by-step walkthrough
Follow the sequence below in order.
- If you are unsure about a line call, a ball that cannot be called "out" is considered good.
- To spread the load in a bag well, keep its center of gravity close to your body: heavy items against your back, light items on the outside, and no heavy loads on the lower back or at the top.
To picture it, le portail de Rally lists, among others, "Balles de pickleball extérieur — Packs de 3 ou 6": one example among many.
The criteria that decide
Rank them by what matters most to you.
- The top edge of the net is bordered with a white tape 2 inches (5.08 cm) wide, according to the USA Pickleball rulebook.
- The serve is made underhand, diagonally toward the opponent's service area, from behind the baseline.
- A player may enter the non-volley zone at any time, except when volleying the ball.
- The hitting surface of a legal paddle must show no delamination, hole, crack, rough texture, or dent that breaks the skin of the paddle (USA Pickleball rulebook).
- Besides resin and porous concrete, the FFT states that pickleball can also be played on a gym floor.
Pitfalls to avoid
Here are the pitfalls that come up, each with its explanation.
- After the serve, a ball that hits a player or anything the player is wearing is a fault, except for the paddle or the hand below the wrist holding the paddle.
- If a noncompliant paddle is detected before the match starts, the player may change it without penalty; once the match has started, the team loses that match; after the score sheet has been turned in, the result stands.
- A serve that hits the net and then lands in the opponent's non-volley zone or outside the service area is a fault.
- The non-volley zone fault also applies to momentum — if the volleyer's momentum makes them touch the zone, or touch their partner who is touching it, it is a fault, even if the ball is already dead.
- In a tournament, a player may be asked to change clothes if they are inappropriate, especially if the clothing is close in color to the tournament ball.
