Getting started in pickleball: what goes in your first bag?

The Bagage de Court editorial team.

The first bag. For a first session, the essentials come down to very little: a paddle, balls, water, a towel and shoes suited to the court. The rest, such as pouches or specific covers, can come later depending on how you play. A list prepared the night before prevents forgetting anything.

For “Getting started in pickleball: what goes in your first bag?”, I have put everything in order so that you save time. Build a complete first pickleball bag without buying useless accessories. Each section has its role, in this order: how everything fits together, starting gently, and what not to neglect. It is meant for pickleball players in France, beginners or club members, who want to choose and organize their bag and travel with their gear, and who want straight answers.

How everything fits together

At the heart of the matter is the double-bounce rule: after the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleying is allowed.

Keep this logic in mind: only the player or team that is serving can score a point, and points go up one at a time.

Keep this logic in mind: a player may enter the non-volley zone at any time, except while volleying the ball. Use this principle as the thread running through the rest.

Here is the guiding idea: the USA Pickleball rules allow two types of serve, the volley serve and the “drop serve,” where the ball is hit after it has bounced. The drop serve places no limit on the number or location of bounces.

Starting gently

Here is the sequence to follow, from start to finish.

  1. To distribute the load of a bag well, keep its center of gravity close to your body: heavy items against your back, light items on the outside, and avoid heavy loads on your lower back or at the top.
  2. When in doubt about a line call, a ball that cannot be called “out” is considered good.

What not to neglect

Avoid falling into these common traps.

  • Signs of a bag that is too heavy, cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics: leaning forward to compensate, walking with difficulty, straps digging into the shoulders.
  • The non-volley zone fault also applies to momentum: if the volleyer's momentum makes them touch the zone, or touch their partner who is touching it, it is a fault, even if the ball is already dead.
  • In a tournament, a player may be asked to change outfits if the clothing is inappropriate, in particular if its color is close to that of the tournament ball.
  • After the serve, a ball that touches a player or anything the player is wearing is a fault, except the paddle or the hand below the wrist holding the paddle.
  • If a non-conforming paddle is detected before the match begins, the player may change it without penalty; once the match has started, the team loses that match; after the scorecard has been turned in, the result stands.

What gear should you bring for a first session?

A figure to keep handy: USA Pickleball indicates a minimum playing area of 30 feet wide by 60 feet long, which is larger than the court itself (20 by 44 feet), to leave room around the lines.

A figure to keep handy: each team has two timeouts for games to 11 or 15 points, and three for a game to 21 points. Each lasts one minute at most.

As for the data, note this: the pickleball court measures 6.10 m wide by 13.41 m long, according to the Fédération française de tennis.

Which accessories can wait?

To stay within the rules: in a match with line judges, the only line call left to the players is the centerline on the serve.

What the measurements say: the USA Pickleball rules provide for a distance of 22 feet (± 1 inch, or 6.71 m) between the net posts, and a net at least 21 feet 9 inches (6.63 m) long.

Your reminder list

If you keep only this, it will already be useful.

  • The non-volley zone fault also applies to momentum.
  • Only the player or team that is serving can score a point.
  • The USA Pickleball rules allow two types of serve.

Your pickleball bag, ready before you leave

A simple list to read again before each session, to adapt to your own play and your club.

  • Pickleball paddle, preferably protected by a cover — The playing gear is the main item, and the cover limits scratches inside the bag.
  • Enough pickleball balls — The game is played with a specific perforated ball, so bring some even if the club provides them.
  • Filled water bottle — Stay hydrated during the session.
  • Towel and a change of clothes — Be able to change after the effort.
  • Shoes suited to the gym or court — They go in a separate pocket so they do not dirty the rest.
  • Pouch for keys, phone and papers — Avoid losing them at the bottom of the bag.
